If you were going to pick the most successful excavator families in the history of construction machinery,
Komatsu would have the PC200,
Caterpillar would have the 320,
and the machine carrying the flag for Hitachi would almost certainly be the EX200.

If Caterpillar stands for unstoppable raw power and Komatsu stands for flawless all-around balance, then in the golden age of construction machinery there was also a striking splash of orange that, on the strength of unmatched speed, became the one that so many veteran operators still carry a torch for. That machine is Hitachi’s legendary workhorse — the EX200.

Back in the day on the job site, the moment this orange streak swung the house around and dropped the bucket, the motion was so quick it looked like footage played on fast forward. So today let us kick back, pour a pot of hot tea, and talk about this loading king that once ruled job sites far and wide on speed alone.

Why the EX200 Matters

A lot of younger operators, the first time they ever touched a Hitachi, were already looking at a ZX200. But for the old hands, the series that really built Hitachi’s reputation was not the ZX line at all — it was the earlier EX line.

In many countries, the moment someone brings up 20-ton class excavators, three machines pop into people’s heads:

  • the Komatsu PC200
  • the Cat 320
  • the Hitachi EX200

Someone even joked that if you photographed every yellow and orange excavator on the world’s job sites in the 1990s, you would find that at least a third of them came from these three big families. And the EX200 was Hitachi’s calling card to the world.

There is a vivid little exchange that used to make the rounds in the construction machinery world. The boss is staring at the mound of dirt in front of him, worried, and he turns to the dispatcher and says:
“There are still dozens of dump trucks lined up back there — which machine loads the fastest and can clear this whole convoy?”

The dispatcher does not even think about it. He turns around and shouts:
“Go get that Hitachi over here! Just floor the throttle and I guarantee those trucks won’t even get a chance to puff their exhaust — we’ll haul dirt until they start questioning their life choices.”

That is the deepest mark the EX200 left on its era. If you wanted to put it in martial-arts-novel terms, it was like a wandering swordsman who took the principle that speed beats everything to its absolute limit.

Origins in the 1980s

The story has to start back in the 1980s. The construction machinery industry was going through a big transformation at the time. Hydraulic technology kept getting more mature, engines kept getting stronger, and the global infrastructure market was beginning to expand fast.

Hitachi was already a top-tier player in the field of hydraulics. In fact, what Hitachi did best in its early years was not building complete machines, but building hydraulic systems. Many of its competitors admitted that Hitachi’s hydraulic technology sat solidly in the industry’s first tier.

So Hitachi decided to push its hydraulic advantage to the extreme — and that is how the EX200 was born.

First Generation (late 1980s)

The first-generation EX200 and its long-undercarriage version, the EX200LC, burst onto the scene in the late 1980s. In terms of timing, this period roughly lines up with Komatsu’s PC200-1 to -2 era.

Hitachi fitted it with the classic Isuzu engine, which had a crisp sound, and right out of the gate it caused a stir thanks to highly efficient movements that beat others in its class. Its biggest strength was not that it was especially powerful, nor that it was especially fast, but that its movements were especially smooth.

The first time a lot of veteran operators ran the EX200, they got a particular feeling: that they were not operating a hunk of steel so much as operating their own arm. That sense of finesse later became the single biggest label attached to Hitachi excavators.

Second Generation

By the second generation the EX200-2 and the EX200LC-2 came onto the stage. This generation moved into Komatsu’s -3 to -4 era, and Hitachi started experimenting with smarter hydraulic control on it while reliability improved dramatically.

It was also from this generation that large numbers of machines poured into Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the South American markets. For many countries the EX200-2 was their first introduction to Hitachi.

Third Generation

By the third generation things started getting interesting. This generation had not only the standard EX200-3 and the long-undercarriage EX200LC-3, but also, aimed at the harsh environments of heavy-duty work, the high-track reinforced EX200H-3 and the long-crawler reinforced EX200LCH-3.

Many people in the industry consider this generation the point where Hitachi truly came of age. The cab got more comfortable, the movements got faster, the structural parts got more durable, and the coordination of the hydraulic system took another step up. It happened to run head-on into the full competition of Komatsu’s -5 era.

A lot of operators, when sizing it up, would say the same line:
“Once you’ve run a Hitachi, every other machine afterward just feels a little off.”

That is something of an exaggeration, but it does say a lot about Hitachi’s reputation among the people actually in the seat.

Fifth Generation — The Peak

And the generation that truly pushed this family to its peak — the one that carved its name onto the altar — was the fifth.

If you go and flip through Hitachi’s official parts catalog from back then, you will find that the derivatives of the -5 generation were as varied as a kaleidoscope. Beyond the most classic standard pair (the EX200-5 and the EX200LC-5), Hitachi’s engineers basically turned into mod-shop fanatics.

They went to work on the tail end and rolled out ultra-short-swing models that could turn around in narrow lanes:

  • EX200SS-5
  • EX200LCSS-5

Felt the undercarriage was not tough enough? They reinforced it and cooked up the heavy-duty undercarriage versions:

  • EX200LC-5HG

You can find all of these models in Hitachi’s EX200-5 series parts catalog, and the family resemblance is unmistakable.

Beyond these models that were stamped right on the nameplate, you would also often see all kinds of special factory-modified versions out on job sites:

  • Long-reach versions with an especially long arm
  • River-maintenance versions for clearing out silt
  • Forestry versions and log-loader versions that turn into tree-felling maniacs out in the hills and woods
  • Material-handler versions grabbing scrap at the docks

These usually fall under factory modifications or special configurations and are not necessarily written out separately on the model nameplate.

After this whole combination of moves, Hitachi had filled up just about every corner of the 20-ton-class stage.

Decoding the Suffixes

At this point some of you may already be dizzy from this long string of suffixes, so let us take a moment to sort them out:

  • LC – long crawler undercarriage
  • H – high track or reinforced version
  • LCH – long crawler reinforced version
  • SS – super short swing
  • HG – heavy-duty undercarriage
  • LV – long front version
  • X – special condition version
  • E – export version
  • Z – market-specific version
  • K – specially reinforced version

One thing worth flagging is that these letters can be defined a bit differently from region to region, so when you are looking at a machine you still have to judge by its actual configuration.

If you only count the trunk models with the largest population worldwide, the construction machinery world generally simplifies this huge family down to eight:

  1. EX200
  2. EX200LC
  3. EX200-2
  4. EX200LC-2
  5. EX200-3

These eight models basically make up the core development line of the Hitachi EX200. All those other dazzling suffixes are mostly branches that grew out to serve specific working conditions.

To this day there are still huge numbers of EX200-5s out there working, especially in Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America. Many of these machines have logged over 20,000 hours — even 30,000 — and can still get the job done.

What Made It Special: Efficiency

This, in fact, is the most legendary thing about the EX200. It does not emphasize power the way Cat does, nor balance the way Komatsu does. What Hitachi does best is efficiency.

With the same load of dirt and the same tank of fuel, a lot of operators find that the EX200 can always squeeze out a little more work. The reason comes down to how well its hydraulic system is matched. The coordination between the engine and the hydraulic pump practically became a textbook example for that era.

Thanks to the combined-motion hydraulic system Hitachi was so proud of, whether it was raising the boom while pulling the arm in, or slewing the house while throwing the bucket, it all flowed as smoothly as drifting clouds and running water. And paired with that crisp roar of the Isuzu engine, doing earthwork with it was a feast for both the eyes and the ears.

There is also an interesting phenomenon around the EX200. A lot of contractors pick a Komatsu when they buy their very first excavator, but when they go to expand the fleet they often circle back and buy a Hitachi. The reason is simple: the boss is in charge of making money, the operator is in charge of doing the work, and operators by and large just love running Hitachis.

So a lot of companies end up with a strange mix in the fleet — with PC200s, 320s, and EX200s all parked together — but the most fought-over seat usually belongs to the Hitachi.

The Downsides

Of course the EX200 is not without its faults. And here is the interesting part: its biggest strength comes from the hydraulic system, and its biggest weakness comes from the hydraulic system too.

Precisely because this system is so precise, it has higher demands on the quality of the hydraulic oil and stricter maintenance requirements. A lot of the failures are not really problems with the machine itself, but problems caused by improper use and upkeep.

When it comes to common issues, they pretty much follow the pattern of any aging midsize excavator:

  • Hydraulic pump wear
  • Main control valve aging
  • Growing slack in the slewing system
  • Aging electrical wiring
  • Engine oil leaks
  • Undercarriage wear (tracks, rollers, idlers, slewing bearing)
  • Age-related issues in the engine and fuel system (fuel consumption, cold starting, injectors, seals)

These problems are especially common on used machines that have changed hands many times.

There is also a very practical issue hiding here. A platform as old as the EX200 can be fixed, sure — but if the previous owner was sloppy about maintenance, the faults turn into a whole chain reaction. Which is why when you are buying a used one, the machine’s actual condition matters far more than the model on the nameplate.

The funny thing though is that even with plenty of issues, a lot of owners are still willing to keep repairing it — because once it is fixed it can still make money. And that is exactly why the used market is so fond of the EX200.

Classic Oil-Leak Joke

On the subject of oil leaks there is a classic old joke that gets passed around:
“If an old Hitachi excavator somehow is not leaking oil, then you’d better shut it down and check it right away — because it probably means there’s no oil left in its belly.”

That is a joke of course. But because it chased extreme speed and high-pressure response in its movements, once the EX200 gets up in years, leaks and seeps from the control valve and the hydraulic lines became almost its standard badge.

And on those -2 and -3 models from back then, the computer board and the hydraulic pump control system would occasionally throw a little tantrum. When that happened, the bold old-timers on the job site would pull out their amazing field hacks: computer board dead, machine moving sluggishly and bogging down — what do you do? The old hand just grabs a piece of wire or rigs up a manual switch and jams the pump’s regulator straight to maximum flow (what everyone nicknames “locking the pump dead”). Sure, the machine then turns into a fuel guzzler belching black smoke, but that surge of raw, hot-tempered power could often muscle the deadline in front of them across the finish line.

User Reputation

With the downsides covered, let us talk about its reputation among users. People’s opinions of the EX200 are usually pretty polarized, but on the whole they lean positive.

The people who love it will say it is tough, easy to fix, easy to source parts for, and steady on the job. The people who do not care for it feel that, after all, an old machine just does not have the fuel economy, comfort, and fine electronic control of a newer one.

Set against a newer generation of machines, the EX200’s advantage really is not in being technically advanced, but in a kind of old-school reliability. And that is exactly why a lot of longtime owners would rather just keep nursing it along.

Used Market Position

As for where it stands in the used market, this machine — the -5 generation especially — is hard currency to this day.

If you observe the global used market you will notice an interesting pattern:

  • Komatsu’s PC200 has enormous circulation volume
  • Cat’s 320 has an extremely high resale value
  • Hitachi’s EX200 sits right between the two

Usually cheaper than a Cat of the same year, but clearly better than a lot of ordinary brands in terms of operating feel and reliability. So it has long been one of the models that used-equipment dealers most like to deal in.

A well-maintained old Hitachi changes hands very quickly in the used market, often passing from the front lines of coastal infrastructure projects all the way out to the sand pits and forestry zones of remote regions to keep shining on. The classic types like the EX200-5 and EX200LC-5 are especially easy for the market to accept, because they take care of versatility, ease of repair, and price all at once.

Looking at the bigger market picture, Hitachi never dominated North America the way Cat did, nor dominated Japan the way Komatsu did. But in Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and Africa, Hitachi has always been one of the most important players. In a lot of regions a certain pattern even took shape: the boss buys Komatsu, the mines buy Cat, and the veteran operator just loves Hitachi.

It was this long accumulation of reputation that ultimately helped the EX200 become one of the highest-population 20-ton-class platforms in the world.

After-Sales and Maintenance

When it comes to after-sales service and ease of maintenance, there is basically nothing to worry about. The EX200’s service logic is pretty down-to-earth — not too reliant on complex electronic diagnostics, leaning more on the experience of veteran mechanics, hands-on disassembly, and routine inspection.

Because its population was so huge back then, and the coverage of its parts catalog and substitute parts is so wide, most repair jobs can find the matching part or an alternative solution. And the supply chain around the EX200-5 parts in particular looks quite active, with used parts, salvaged parts, and remanufactured parts all common.

For a mechanic, fixing a Hitachi EX200 is like a cook whipping up a plate of scrambled eggs with tomato — a basic skill long since baked into muscle memory.

From a maintenance standpoint:

  • Upside: the structure is not finicky and routine upkeep is easy to understand.
  • Downside: the older the machine gets, the more the seals, lines, pumps and valves, and wiring harnesses tend to develop that “everything is just a little bit off everywhere” kind of comprehensive aging.

In other words, it is not that it is hard to fix — it is that it needs fixing on an ongoing basis.

The Branching Family Tree

There is one more interesting thing about the EX200, which is that it is like an old tree with an awful lot of branches. On the surface everyone only remembers the one EX200, but the moment someone in the trade flips open the catalog they discover that growing off of it are H, SS, LC, HG, LCH, LV, X, E, Z, and K — this whole big pile of branches — as if the same machine had been modified and adapted over and over across different regions, different working conditions, and different eras.

Hitachi’s EX200-5 parts catalog even pulls the EX210H-5 and EX210LCH-5 into the same family tree. It also carries the air of an old veteran of the trade: just when you think it went obsolete and left the stage long ago, it turns out you can still spot it everywhere — on job sites, in salvage yards, at parts shops, and on used-equipment platforms — like one of those elders who does not talk much but never really left.

The Transition to ZX

After time moved into the 21st century, emission regulations got stricter and electronic control became more and more widespread, and the “EX” designation that had roamed the trade for so many years began its honorable retirement, gradually giving way to Hitachi’s all-new ZX family.

The construction-machinery line everyone knows, the main line, then became the few models you most often see on job sites today:

  • ZX200
  • ZX200-3
  • ZX200-5
  • ZX200-6
  • ZX200-7

They took the baton from their forebears and kept charging ahead in the midsize excavator market. And this is also the most common Hitachi 20-ton-class lineage in the global used market today.

A lot of veteran operators still feel that the ZX is an excellent product of a new era, while the EX is the legend of an era gone by.

If the PC200 stands for balance and the 320 stands for power, then what the EX200 stands for is maybe another word entirely — smoothness.
