Kubota KX161 Excavator Static Review
#1
Kubota is widely recognized for its production of compact excavators, and many are familiar with its rice harvesters in southern China. However, few know that Kubota ranks as the leading global brand in small excavators, with its compact machines consistently topping global sales charts. In the Chinese market, Kubota offers a wide range of models, including the U15, KX135, KX155, KX161, and KX185. Today, we will explore one of its 6-ton class flagship models, the KX161.
Striking Appearance
Apart from the KX185, Kubota’s excavators in the Chinese market sport a vibrant blue paint that gives them a bright and eye-catching appearance.
Exquisite Craftsmanship
Having experienced many excavators, I couldn't help but admire the fine craftsmanship of Kubota’s bodywork and cabin interior. The attention to detail in Kubota’s manufacturing is exceptional, and the difference between domestic and international brands is clearly noticeable.
Unique Wide Tracks
Unlike most 6-ton excavators, the KX161 is equipped with an unusually wide 600mm track. This distinctive feature offers several advantages, which I will explain in more detail shortly. But for now, let's take a look at these "big feet."
Three Key Features
  1. Zero Tail Swing (No Tail Overhang)
The Kubota KX161 features a zero tail swing design, meaning the upper body of the machine rotates without extending beyond the width of the tracks. This is especially beneficial in narrow spaces, allowing the excavator to operate in confined areas without worrying about the tail overhanging.
  2. Arm Side Shift
The KX161 is equipped with a side-shift arm mechanism, allowing it to perform digging operations along tight spaces, such as near walls or fences, without the need to reposition the entire machine. Coupled with the zero tail swing, it’s ideal for operations in constrained environments.
  3. 600mm Ultra-Wide Tracks
Typically, 450mm tracks are standard on 6-ton excavators, but the KX161 is equipped with 600mm tracks—commonly found on 20-ton models. This unique design provides better stability, especially during tasks like dredging or working in soft ground. While smaller excavators may get stuck, the KX161 performs reliably in such conditions.
Five Leading Technologies
  1. Automatic Idle = Fuel Efficiency
When the joystick is idle for more than 4 seconds, the engine automatically switches to idle mode. Once the joystick is moved again, the engine instantly returns to its previous speed, conserving fuel during inactivity.
  2. Kubota Intelligent Control System (Digital Display)
The system displays key data such as operational hours, fuel level, water temperature, and engine RPM. Any abnormalities are instantly highlighted, allowing the operator to monitor machine performance closely. The system also records fault detection information, which can be used for easier troubleshooting.
  3. Easy Registration
In the event of a lost key, simply insert the "registration key" (red key) followed by the "sub-key" (black key) to register a new one. The lost key will no longer function, enhancing security.
  4. Simple Operation
The Kubota KX161 uses a single key system for starting, door locks, and fuel tank covers. No special procedure is required—just insert and turn the key as usual.
  5. Security Anti-Theft
If a non-registered key is used, the engine will not start. The security system immediately activates, triggering an alarm if an unauthorized attempt is made.
Core Components of the Excavator
  1. Advanced Hydraulic System
Kubota’s hydraulic system adjusts the oil flow based on joystick movements, ensuring that the correct amount of hydraulic fluid is delivered regardless of load size. This ensures smooth operation and minimizes wasted energy, allowing for precise movements and simultaneous operations.
  2. Genuine Kubota Engine
Kubota is one of the few manufacturers that produces its own engines. The KX161 is powered by the Kubota V2403-M engine, which offers 47 horsepower. This clean engine meets U.S. EPA emissions standards and performs reliably even in temperatures as low as -15°C. The low-noise fan also contributes to a quieter operation, making it an environmentally friendly choice.
Additional Features
  1. Easy Daily Inspection
The KX161 is designed for convenience with easy access for daily checks.
  2. Dual-Side Opening Engine Cover
The engine cover opens easily without tools. Both the right and rear panels can be removed for quick access to the engine and fuel system for maintenance.
  3. Simple Maintenance
With a few minutes of effort, the operator can remove the side and rear covers for easy inspection and maintenance of internal components.

Kubota’s KX161 stands out in the 6-ton class with its well-rounded features, such as enhanced stability, fuel efficiency, and superior maneuverability in tight spaces. With cutting-edge technology and robust design, the KX161 is an excellent choice for those looking for a high-performance, durable excavator for various applications.
