Komatsu PC160LC-7 Excavator User Review: Fast, Efficient, and Comfortable
#1
When the name "Komatsu" is mentioned, many might think of it as a renowned brand in the construction machinery industry. In the world of construction equipment, Komatsu holds a significant position, comparable to a leading figure in a group, if not the top boss. Today, we explore the real-world experience of a seasoned operator with the Komatsu PC160LC-7, a popular model in Komatsu’s lineup.
Introduction and User Profile
  • Excavator Model: Komatsu PC160LC-7
  • Operating Hours: 500 hours
  • Operator: Li Mingwei (pseudonym), 28 years old with 6 years of excavator experience
  • Previous Machines: Hitachi large excavators; Komatsu small and medium-sized machines
Li Mingwei, the operator of this Komatsu PC160LC-7, began using the machine in May of this year. At the time of handover, the machine had less than 100 operating hours. Initially used for earthwork around Beijing, it was later moved to a demolition site in the city, with occasional earthworks. Li Mingwei notes that the diesel used in the excavator is supplied by his company, while the site pays based on hourly labor.
Performance Review: Speed, Efficiency, and Fuel Economy
  • Fast Working Speed
The most notable feature of the Komatsu PC160LC-7 for Li Mingwei is its fast working speed and high efficiency. Whether it's earthwork, stone handling, or demolition tasks, the machine handles them all with ease. Li Mingwei appreciates the machine's performance, especially in comparison to other models. The Komatsu CLSS hydraulic system makes operation smooth and responsive, and features like idle alert and automatic deceleration help optimize fuel consumption during routine operations.
  • Fuel Consumption
When it comes to fuel efficiency, Komatsu excavators are often praised for being fuel-efficient. Li Mingwei explains that fuel consumption depends on the work type and the quality of the fuel. For earthmoving tasks, the PC160LC-7 consumes about 120-130 liters of fuel for an 8-hour shift. For demolition work that involves heavy attachments like hydraulic shears and breakers, the fuel consumption increases to 140-150 liters per shift.
  • Hydraulic and Engine Efficiency
The Komatsu PC160LC-7 is equipped with the SAA4D102E-2 engine, delivering 82.4 kW (112 PS) at 2200 rpm/min, with a high fuel efficiency. The engine meets the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) EU and Japan’s Stage II emissions standards, ensuring that the excavator is environmentally friendly. Furthermore, the machine offers four working modes to optimize performance and fuel consumption:
    1. A Mode (Fast Mode)
    2. E Mode (Economy Mode)
    3. B Mode (Breaker Mode)
    4. L Mode (Fine Operation Mode)
In E Mode, the machine automatically adjusts engine speed, controlling fuel consumption and ensuring efficient operation. A feature worth noting is the idle alarm: if the engine idles for more than 5 minutes, the system prompts the operator to turn off the engine to avoid unnecessary fuel consumption. The automatic deceleration feature reduces engine speed when the control lever is in the neutral position, minimizing fuel waste.
Exterior, Cabin, and Maintenance
  • Build Quality and Stability
Li Mingwei considers the overall build of the Komatsu PC160LC-7 to be sturdy. The machine's cabin is reinforced, offering protection in case of a rollover. For additional stability, especially during demolition tasks, the tracks on this machine have been widened, preventing the excavator from getting stuck on rooftops or other unstable surfaces.
  • Cabin Comfort
The cabin of the PC160LC-7 is significantly more spacious than the previous PC150-5, with a 30% increase in size. The operator refers to the cabin as “luxury class,” likening it to a business-class seat in an airplane. The cabin is fully sealed, providing excellent sound insulation, similar to that of a passenger car.
  • Seat Comfort
The seat features advanced vibration damping, making it highly comfortable for long hours of operation. The seat uses a high-damping spring and long-stroke design, which helps alleviate pressure on the operator's spine, reducing the risk of back problems. The seat also reclines, allowing the operator to rest during breaks.
  • Air Conditioning and Controls
Li Mingwei is satisfied with the air conditioning system, noting that it cools quickly and efficiently, with multiple adjustable air vents. The cabin also features a hydraulic lock lever with a smooth and user-friendly design. He also appreciates the machine’s sound system, which provides high-quality audio, making the workday more enjoyable.
  • Maintenance and Accessibility
The maintenance design of the Komatsu PC160LC-7 is also well thought out. The machine’s radiator, intercooler, and oil cooler are arranged in parallel for easy access. Daily maintenance tasks, such as cleaning and removing filters, are simple and do not require special tools. The machine also comes with a large tool compartment, allowing the operator to store essential tools, including the grease gun.
Conclusion: A Good Balance of Efficiency and Fuel Economy
The Komatsu PC160LC-7 impresses with its high efficiency, fast working speed, and fuel-saving features. Although the machine’s fuel consumption may not be the lowest in certain heavy-duty tasks, its performance makes it highly suitable for tasks that require quick execution and high productivity. For operators looking to maximize output in a short amount of time, the PC160LC-7 delivers exceptional value.
Li Mingwei concludes that, after 500 hours of operation, the machine has not experienced any significant issues, and he remains very satisfied with its performance. The next scheduled maintenance will occur at 800 hours, and the team looks forward to providing further updates on the Komatsu PC160LC-7's performance.
This excavator strikes a good balance between fuel efficiency, working speed, and comfort, making it an excellent choice for both general excavation and demolition tasks.
