Case 580L Backhoe Loader User Report
#1
After the year 2000, the streets of Shenyang witnessed the arrival of an eye-catching machine — the Case 580L backhoe loader (commonly known as a "two-end busy" machine). When people first saw it, it immediately drew attention, and it quickly entered the radar of the leadership at the Shenyang Water Supply Company (now part of Shenyang Water Group). A year later, the decision was made to purchase one.
In November 2001, our Case 580L arrived. At that time, there were only three Case 580Ls in Shenyang: one with our company and two with Shenyang Gas Company. The arrival of the Case 580L marked the beginning of a new era for us, thanks to its outstanding performance in several aspects.
Key Features of the Case 580L
  1. High Mobility: The machine's maximum speed reaches 40 km/h, making it perfect for quick transitions between different repair sites, greatly reducing downtime and improving work efficiency.
  2. Easy Operation: Unlike other models, the Case 580L features fewer control levers, which makes it easier to operate, reducing the time spent on repair tasks.
  3. Low Failure Rate: The machine has demonstrated minimal failure, staying reliable on the job day in and day out, which proved the initial purchase decision to be correct.
Maintenance and Repairs
During the nine years of use, while the machine performed admirably, some issues did arise. The most significant one occurred when we mistakenly used ordinary transmission oil instead of the specialized torque fluid required for the gearbox. This led to the gearbox malfunctioning after two years, requiring a repair costing over 30,000 yuan. Apart from this major issue, the repairs were generally limited to wear-and-tear parts such as the central control switch for movement and the gear shift lever.
The machine's most important component, the Cummins 4BT3.9 engine, has performed well and hasn't required any major repairs.
User Experience and Comfort
The Case 580L is equipped with a fully hydraulic steering system, making the steering wheel very light and easy to use. With just two full turns, the wheel can be fully turned, improving steering precision. The loader control lever is simple, and the excavator levers are also smooth, allowing for quick combined movements. The gear shift lever is conveniently placed on the right side and integrates with the manual clutch. Additionally, the cushioned seat offers comfort for the operator, though it cannot be fully reclined, which is a minor inconvenience during long shifts.
Modifications and Customization
To enhance the machine's usability, I made a few modifications:
  1. Audio and Video System: Originally equipped with just a radio, I upgraded the system to a DVD player with visual capabilities. The sound system was upgraded from two speakers to four, which improved the sound quality significantly. I also considered installing a subwoofer, but due to space constraints in the cab, I had to forgo it.
  2. Emergency Warning Light: I added a police-grade warning light to improve safety and visibility when the machine is in use.
Issues and Suggestions for Improvement
Although the Case 580L performed well overall, there are a few areas that could be improved:
  1. Cab Design: The cab could be better designed, especially when it comes to the seat adjustments and steering wheel position. In comparison to brands like JCB, the Case 580L lacks adjustable steering, which could offer a more comfortable driving experience.
  2. Old Engine Technology: The engine used in the Case 580L is somewhat outdated and lacks electronic control, which puts it at a disadvantage compared to more modern machines.
  3. Expensive Parts and Maintenance: All parts and maintenance materials are from the original manufacturer, which makes the overall maintenance costs higher. The lack of third-party alternatives for parts creates a significant cost burden for users.
About Case Company
Case Construction Equipment has a history spanning over 160 years, founded by J. I. Case. Initially producing steam rollers and graders, Case expanded its product line and became a full-range manufacturer of construction equipment by 1912. The company has pioneered many industry-firsts and continues to innovate and lead in the construction equipment sector. Today, Case offers over 90 models across 15 product lines, delivering reliable machinery for the most challenging construction tasks globally.
Conclusion
Overall, the Case 580L backhoe loader is an excellent and versatile piece of machinery. It offers great mobility, ease of operation, and low failure rates, making it ideal for a variety of tasks, including road repairs and small construction jobs. However, there are some areas where improvements could be made, particularly in the cab design and engine technology. The high costs of original parts also pose a challenge. Despite these drawbacks, the Case 580L is a reliable and efficient machine that gets the job done and continues to serve its purpose well. It would be great to see further improvements in future models, especially to reduce maintenance costs and enhance user comfort.
