Volvo EC210BLC Excavator User Review: Performance and Challenges After 6000 Hours
#1
I have been using two Volvo EC210BLC excavators, with the first one purchased in April 2007 and the second in July 2007. Since both excavators are of the same model and started working around the same time, the gap of just three months between their purchases reduces any accidental factors, making their usage experiences quite comparable. Here's a summary of their performance and issues after extensive use.
Issues Encountered During Use:
1. Water Pump Issues
Excavator 1 (Machine #1):
  • After 200 hours of operation, the water tank was found to be low, and the problem was traced back to the water pump.
  • At 1100 hours, the water pump failed and was replaced under warranty. However, after just three months of use, the pump broke again at 1900 hours. Since it was still under warranty, Volvo covered the cost of the replacement.
  • The water pump failed again at 5300 hours, and this time I had to pay for a new one out of pocket.
Excavator 2 (Machine #2):
  • At 300 hours, the water pump failed and was replaced under warranty.
  • The pump failed again at 1600 hours, but Volvo covered the replacement cost.
  • By 3100 hours, the water pump failed a third time, and I had to purchase a new one from a Volvo dealer.
  • After replacing the water pump, the machine has run smoothly up to 6100 hours.
Summary:
  • The water pump's average lifespan seems to be around 3000 hours, which I find too short for such a critical component. The cost and inconvenience of frequent replacements are significant for users.
2. Piston Seal Issues
Excavator 1 (Machine #1):
  • At 1200 hours, the small arm cylinder started leaking oil. It was replaced free of charge under warranty.
  • At 4600 hours, the large arm cylinder began leaking oil, and by 5100 hours, the right-side cylinder had significant leakage, requiring a full replacement.
  • At 5200 hours, the small arm cylinder started leaking again.
  • The bucket cylinder began leaking at 5000 hours. While it has not been replaced yet, it's due for replacement soon.
Excavator 2 (Machine #2):
  • Up until 4500 hours, the excavator had no major issues. However, at 5000 hours, all cylinders started leaking.
  • The large arm cylinder was completely replaced at 5500 hours due to severe leakage.
  • At 6000 hours, the small arm and bucket cylinders also experienced significant leakage, necessitating replacement.
Summary:
  • Based on my experience, Volvo's piston seals seem to have an average lifespan of around 5000 hours, which is shorter than expected for heavy-duty equipment.
3. Hydraulic System Problems
Excavator 1 (Machine #1):
  • At 800 hours, a small oil line on the distributor leaked significantly, and Volvo replaced it under warranty.
  • At 2000 hours, the hydraulic system developed multiple oil leaks.
  • At 3800 hours, the small arm cylinder's oil intake pipe burst.
  • At 4200 hours, the main oil supply line to the swing motor burst.
  • At 4600 hours, one of the large pumps had a major oil leak, and I had to pay for a replacement.
Excavator 2 (Machine #2):
  • From 2000 hours, the hydraulic system began leaking at multiple points.
  • At 3600 hours, the large arm oil supply pipe burst.
  • At 3800 hours, the small arm cylinder's oil intake pipe burst, and I had to purchase a new pipe myself.
Summary:
  • Both excavators experienced multiple issues with the hydraulic system, including oil leaks and burst pipes, which required several replacements. The cost of repairs for these components is a concern.
4. Other Parts Issues
Excavator 1 (Machine #1):
  • The track roller continues to leak oil, even at this stage.
Excavator 2 (Machine #2):
  • At 6000 hours, the excavator stopped responding during operation, and the electronic valve had to be replaced. The cost of the part was 1500 RMB.
Conclusion
Both excavators have worked for over 6000 hours, and while they have experienced the issues mentioned above, no major problems beyond these have occurred. However, the cost of spare parts for Volvo equipment is quite high, much more expensive than brands like Doosan and Hyundai, which is a point of frustration for many users in the area.
On the positive side, both machines perform similarly in terms of speed, power, and operational sensitivity, with no noticeable differences. Despite some recurring issues and high repair costs, the machines continue to operate efficiently, showcasing Volvo's robust engineering and performance in demanding environments.
